Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books encourages students to read good books and have fun while competing with peers!

Participants compete in teams of up to five students led by a volunteer coach.

  • Two age divisions: Grades 3-5 and Grades 6-8.

  • Sign up as a team or individual (individuals will be joined to form teams).

  • Each team member reads books from the designated 15-book list from Oct-Jan.

  • Teams meet approximately once per month Oct-Dec, then twice in January leading up to the Battle of the Books competition. (Practice time/location determined by coaches.)

Battle Format:

  • Questions test the students’ memory of the books’ plot,characters, author, etc.

  • All teams in the division will be asked a set of questions to the group at large. After each question, they have a designated amount of time to converse and write down their answer on a whiteboard.

    • Grades 3-5 receive 30 questions with 45 seconds to respond.

    • Grades 6-8 receive 45 questions with 30 seconds to respond.

  • All answers will be given in the format of the Title and Author of the book.

  • Teams will earn 1 point for the correct Title and 1 point for the correct Author, for a total of 2 possible points on each question.

  • The team in each age division with the most points wins!

Registration fee for this program is $50 per student, which may be waived for financial hardship.
