Second Grade
Ms. Anna McInville
Hello! My name is Anna McInville. I am from the Des Moines area and attended Catholic schools growing up. I graduated from Loras College with a degree in Elementary Education and an endorsement in reading. I have a passion for teaching. I seek a classroom environment that encourages all students to share their talents and gifts with others. Seeing the students grow in their faith and academics as the school year progresses is very rewarding. I enjoy playing board games, spending time with friends and family, and coaching volleyball in my free time. I am ecstatic to be a part of the St. Luke's community!
Mrs. Michelle Cortlandt
I am truly excited to join the St. Luke’s family as a member of the teaching staff!
I grew up in Urbandale and graduated from St. Pius X and Dowling Catholic. I earned a BA in English from the University of Iowa and recently completed a second BA in K-6 Education from the University of Northern Iowa.
Between earning degrees, I worked in health insurance followed by 22 wonderful years as a stay-at-home mom and active volunteer in youth programs, including 4-H and Faith Formation. I also gained experience as a Teacher Associate at St. Theresa’s Catholic School.
I am an active member of St. Theresa’s parish. My husband and I have two adult children and two fur babies. Outside the classroom, I enjoy tending to my year-round garden, walking my dogs, and spending quality time with family.
I look forward to helping students master the skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. Most importantly, I welcome the opportunity to deepen our faith and nurture a Catholic culture in the classroom, guiding students to grow in loving and serving God with all their heart, soul, and mind.
WHAT IS TAUGHT IN 2nd GRADE?
Religion
Second grade is a big year for Sacraments! We spend most of our year discussing the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion. We also discuss different parables in the Bible.
Academics
Second graders learn regrouping when adding and subtracting in math. We discuss the place value of three-digit numbers. We end the year with money, time, measurement, and data.
Second graders continue their phonics instruction from the previous years. We also start to build on their reading comprehension by adding in text comprehension. We discuss parts of stories, grammar, and decoding words.
Special Activities
Second grade has many special activities in which we participate! In the fall, the Ankeny Fire Department comes to visit. In the winter, Polk County Conservation comes to discuss animal adaptations. In the spring, we go on a Field trip to the Science Center.
